I was sent to Houston on a recruiting trip for my law school. I flew in Saturday and out Sunday which didn't leave too much time, but I managed to get some good things in. The event was Saturday afternoon nearly immediately after I landed. So I went to that and talked to some potential students. Pretty nice people in Texas, but they all say Dallas and Austin are better than Houston!
That evening I went to a nice steakhouse called III Forks ... it's supposedly a Texas thing. It was ok. The steak was overdone, which for a steakhouse is a crime. But the cheesy potatoes and bread pudding were excellent. I made about 3 meals out of dinner - it was all I ate in Houston - my hotel room had a fridge!
Sunday I had the whole day. I got up early and went to church. Yes, church. I had not been in years. But, this was not just some random church. My hotel was less than 20 minutes from Lakewood Church, where Joel Osteen is the pastor and he was actually there giving the sermon the weekend I was there. So ... I went. And I am soooo glad I did. They treat visitors like royalty. I was personally escorted to the second row for the service. And afterward I got to meet the man and shake his hand. It was a great experience with a lasting impression.
After that I went back to the hotel and changed. Then I headed to Minute Maid Park to see the Astros take on the Tigers! It was my first visit to a ball park outside of California. I got a give away orbitz headband, bought a mini bat and baseball, and got ice cream in a helmet (the helmet for my nephew who collects them!). My ticket was out in right field ... 4 rows from the field ... and guess how much I paid ... a whopping $11!! I walked around the park a lot and just took in the sites. The game didn't hold me interest much because I don't have a stake in either team, but I am so glad I went! I also did something I never do ... I left before the game was over because I had to catch a flight!
Just 4 rows from the field!
Homerun tank - 1300 exactly when I was there!
The field is inside and the AC was up so high I needed a sweatshirt.
After that, it was off to the airport to head back to California. Less than 36 hours in Houston, but got a lot in! :)
